Carrie, I'm writing this to update you regarding some recent progress on the Ilion sites. We have deemed the Prine Cleaners site as a potential hazardous waste site and have permission from the Housing Authority to perform a Site Characterization. The Authority has asked us to meet with the residents to discuss the investigation and answer any questions they may have before we begin. The meeting has not been scheduled, but we hope to have the site characterization finalized by the end of the year.
We also deemed Duofold a potential hazardous waste site and requested access to perform a site characterization. As a result, the parent company has approached us and has indicated they will most likely enter the State's Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP). The BCP is avoluntary program funded by the remedial party (owner in this case) and if they enter it will produce a much more detailed investigation of the site. Regarding sites in our remedial program, I would encourage you or members of the Ilion Project to sign up for the Department's listserv. Through the listserv you and others will automatically be notified of major milestones for any project in Herkimer County. Unfortunately you will receive notices for all sites in Herkimer County as you cannot select specific projects. The link to the Department's listserv can be found at http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/61092.html
Mr Peter Taylor from the DEC is taking phone calls from Ilion residents and PAST residents who have information about dumping or memories of perceived contamination. He can be reached at the DEC: 315-785-2511 or
DEC Office, 317 Washington St., Watertown, NY 13601
(please don't call with health info./concerns - you can direct that info. to our site and we'll advise you from there)
Thank you, Mr. Taylor!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up in Ilion during the sixties and seventies and saw a lot of changes to the downtown/Main street of Ilion. I think the biggest changing factor was the fire that destroyed most of a block on Main Street including the Hardware Store and National Auto Store as well as the Store known as Home Service. When the fire was out and they removed the debris left from the fire , they put it all in the dumps at the end of East Street. Everything that didn't burn and what was left was dumped into…

My son was getting sick at the Remington Elementary school all the time then I withdrew him. He has not been sick since. The school had an asbestos removal over the summer but didn't finish filling in the spaces where asbestos was removed. It was a unhealthy place for children to go to school. I called the DEC and EPA and they said that they would investigate it but I felt that they didn't do enough. I was unaware that there was the "Ilion Project" This was a problem that I saw before…

Everyone should know that people NEED TO WRITE TO THE DEC about the proposed cleanup for the MGP Site. If a lot of residents, THE ILION BOARD OF TRUSTEES, businesses, any person interested, if they don't write then the site will only be cleaned enough for COMMERCIAL use! No individual residences will be permitted to be erected on those pieces of property! This means that if in 15 years Ilion prospers and the property is wanted to have individual homes built on these sites then they will have…

if you all read the report and viewed the maps, you will see that the backyard next door at 214 E. Clark st. is contaminated as well. It was mentioned on pg 14 and is in the maps for the proposed areas to excavate/remedy. This is a 3 story apartment building. Lots of families have lived there. I lived there for about 8 yrs.... wow.
